Slowing Down and Listening April 18, 2024

I realized that extensive coding was fundamentally rewiring my brain on a deeper level. When you spend all day, every day, cutting through code and honing in on the key details, patterns, and solutions, your brain becomes an expert at quickly identifying the crux of the matter and filtering out all the noise.

In many ways, this can be a blessing. You can become incredibly efficient at problem-solving and processing information in daily life. You can size up a situation, extract the relevant facts, and arrive at a logical conclusion or decision in record time. For example, when reading a book, My brain now automatically sift through the core concepts, key examples, and the relationships between ideas.

The downside, though, is that I've started to lose appreciation for the bullshit - the stories we tell ourselves, the nuances of human interaction, the more holistic view of the world. My brain has become so finely tuned to detect signal from noise that I can now find myself impatient with the meandering nature of everyday life and conversation. It's also had an impact on my personal relationships, as I've found myself less willing to engage with the emotional complexities and ambiguities that are a natural part of the human experience.

Recognize that the bullshit is not always a bad thing, and that there's value in slowing down, listening, and embracing the fullness of life, not just the core essence. It's about being aware of how coding has changed my brain, and consciously making an effort to maintain perspective and empathy.

Coding may have made you an expert at cutting through the noise, but don't forget to appreciate the symphony beneath it.
